Virtual or Real IED? Discover with 260 Test Cases
The advancement of automation and protection technologies in power systems has enabled simulations using virtual IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices). However, critical questions arise:
- Is the virtual IED a faithful replica of the real IED?
- Does it exhibit the same behavior under real conditions?
- Are the algorithms and functionalities equivalent?
- Are the responses identical?
To answer these questions, Conprove conducted a comprehensive study, performing 260 tests on the physical IED and 260 tests on the virtual IED, and compared the results in detail.
The Study
The objective was to evaluate whether the virtual IED can replace the real IED in practical tests and how it can enhance the efficiency and reliability of automation and protection processes. The tests focused on:
- Protection algorithms.
- Responses to electrical events and transients.
- Behavior under extreme and normal operating conditions.
Findings and Conclusions
The results revealed significant similarities and differences between the virtual and real IEDs, showcasing how each can be strategically utilized depending on the test objective.
